AI has the potential to deliver enormous business value for organizations, and its adoption has been sped up by the particular data-related challenges of the pandemic. But there is growing concern around AI bias — situations where AI makes decisions that are systematically unfair in order to particular groups of people. Researchers have found that AI bias has the potential to cause real harm.

I recently had the chance to speak with Ted Kwartler, VP associated with Trusted AI at DataRobot, to get his thoughts on how AI prejudice occurs and what companies can do to make sure their models are fair.

Why AI Bias Happens

In reality, we’re saying there’s a space in between where you can apply some caveats, so a human has to go review it. We call that humble AI in the sense that the algorithm is demonstrating humility when it’s making that prediction. ”

Why It’s Critical to Regulate AI

According in order to DataRobot’s State of AI Bias report , 81% of company leaders want government regulation to define and prevent AI bias.

One of the ongoing challenges of AI will be that it is seen as a “black box, ” where consumers may see inputs and outputs, but have no knowledge of the AI’s internal workings. Companies need to strive for explainability, so people can understand just how AI works and how it might have an effect.

Lastly, he recommends companies establish a grievance process regarding individuals, to give people a way to have discussions with businesses if they feel these people have been treated unjustly.

How AI Can Help Save the Planet

I asked Kwartler for their hopes and predictions intended for the future of AI, and this individual said that he believes AI can help us solve some associated with the biggest problems human beings are currently facing, including climate change.

He shared a story of one of DataRobot’s clients, the cement manufacturer, who used a complex AI model to make 1 of their own plants 1% more efficient, helping the plant save approximately 70, 000 tons of carbon emissions every year.
